What's hot in cinemas this Eid? We find out

Salman Khan-starrer Sultan is dominating most screens, to nobody's surprise
06 Jul, 2016

It's a bit surprising that this Eidul Fitr a single film Sultan has occupied the majority of screens in the city’s multiplexes and cinema houses.

Some would argue that it was expected because the film has the big Bollywood star Salman Khan playing the lead character of Sultan, a Haryanvi wrestler. Khan, for sure, has been the most successful box office draw in the last few years whose movies touch the 100-crore mark as if it’s a given. This means that when he comes out with a film, the rest become circumspect in releasing their projects in the fear of being commercially eclipsed.

But it is also surprising in another sense. In recent times, Pakistani producers have been pretty intrepid in making and showing films on important, festive occasions. We, as some believe, are experiencing the revival of Pakistani cinema. Where are they?

The one Pakistani film that will hit the screens, or has dared to hit the screens alongside Sultan, is Sawal 700 Crore Dollar Ka directed by Jamshed Jan Mohammad. The relatively more anticipated and well-marketed films, for example, Actor-in-Law and Janaan, are slated to be screened on Eidul Azha.

Sultan is directed by Ali Abbas Zafar and has Anushka Sharma and Randeep Hooda as Khan’s co-stars. One of its songs ‘Jag Ghummiya’ sung by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan is already a huge hit among audiophiles.

Sawal 700 Crore Dollar Ka introduces a new pair of actors — Ali Mohiuddin and Qurutulain. Veteran actor Ghulam Mohiuddin will also be seen in an important role in the film.

Apart from these two South Asian films, as it were, four Hollywood projects are going to compete for box office glory on Eidul Fitr. They are: The Legend of Tarzan, The Secret Life of Pets, Finding Dory and Ice Age: Collision Course. The last three are animated movies which means children, primarily, will have a whale of a time at the movies on Eid.

Talking to Dawn, Basit at Nueplex Cinema said: “Tickets for Sultan on the first day of Eid have been sold out, and also for 8th of July. Right now (Monday), limited seats for July 9 are available. The other films that are going to be released on Eid Day are Finding Dory, Ice Age, Sawal 700 Crore Dollar Ka, The Secret Life of Pets and The Legend of Tarzan.”

Answering the question why Sultan has the lion’s share of screen space at multiplexes, head of the marketing department at Atrium Cinemas, Anita Kenneth, used the phrase ‘due to public demand’. On local releases she said: “There’s just one Pakistan film this Eid (Sawal 700 Crore Dollar Ka). And the makers of the other one, Blind Love, decided to defer its screening because of Sultan’s ‘public demand’. The rest are the four Hollywood films.”

Wajahat at Cinepax said: “Sultan has been sold out till July 12. The rest of the films too have been sold out till July 10, but in their case, a few seats are available.”

Salman afraid to release his film without any holiday, he always release his movie during Eid, Diwali or X-Mass. I bet if he release his movie in normal week without any holiday or special day he will suffer huge loss.

@Dipak Singh Movies are not charity, the only reason movies are made to get profit. When u r sure that you will get good collection releasing on a holiday, why do you need to release it on some other day? Releasing on a non-festive weekend might sour the collection by a bit, but only a person with no brain (example, you) will prefer that.

@Dipak Singh Let's not forget the importance of entertainment. During festivals people in good spirit, tend to spend more. Bussinesses want to deliver good entertainment for masses. Finally it is win-win for all.

@zooooba disagree. Movies are definitely not made with the sole purpose of making money. They're made with a view to entertain, surplus follows. You only try and maximise profits by releasing films during festivals. But then, movies that don't entertain will always hit the rocks, released during festivals or otherwise.

Aren’t you guys bored of watching same old Bollywood Movies. I rather support SWAL 700 CAROR KA. Which is a production of modern day Pakistani cinema. After watching movies like Mah e Mir, Moor, Yeh Jawani Phir nahi Ani, Bachana I am confident that this Pakistani movie will be the best, even better than Sultan staring that 50 plus actor with a girl young enough to be his daughter.

@junaid kazi I don't know you are indian or pakistani but your recommendation for sairat movie is appreciable. Its a good movie and depicts real picture of Maharashtra. I am a continuous reader of dawn and noticed that Pakistanis has a typical mindset about Indians believe me in common we don't consider you as an enemy. I think you should make films on your social issues with common human values that could be accepted worldwide just like Sairat movie did. Don't give lecture in films make it simple with emotions, love, human values like friendship, helping others doesn't matter who he or she is. This will give acceptace all over the world. Promote good things and stop seeking foreign hands in your all matter.

Karachi had a sizeable Marathi population before partition. One of our older neighbors were from Karachi and they had migrated along with Sindhi families and had settled in Mumbai. Nice to hear awareness about 'Sairat' in Pakistan.

@Aamer I saw the movie along with our company President, General Managers, a few Professor friends of mine. And these are audiences who have lived and been educated in Ivy League colleges in US, Europe and the professors teach at some best universities in India. We all liked it as much as all the kids. There must be something deep enough for the audience to get connected. Dismissing a piece of art only because it came from a certain geography speaks volumes about many things. Please look at it from a pure entertainment and art view point.
