Priyanka-Deepika's 'Pinga' song slammed as vulgar by Bajirao, Mastani descendants

The descendants protest that Pinga is not a 'Dola Re Dola' kind of an item song
05 Dec, 2015

The Bajirao Mastani ladies, Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra, received a lot of attention for the recently released video for the film's song 'Pinga', but they also invoked the ire of the descendants of Bajirao and Mastani, the warrior couple on whom the film is based.

The descendants are offended by "the vulgar display of women" in the song, reported Indian Express.

“Pinga is not actually performed the way it has been depicted in the movie,” said Dr Anuradha Sahasrabuddhe, a social activist from Pune. "It is a traditional cultural game that is played in women’s gatherings and definitely not a 'Dola Re Dola' kind of an item song with the body showing. It will not be allowed and none of us will tolerate it. We want the songs to be deleted."

According to the Bajirao's descendant Uday Sinh Peshwa, their family requested that the film be kept historically accurate and were assured by Bhansali that the film will be excellent.

The families are now demanding to see the entire film, and insist that it be revised before release.

More objections

They have objected to several other parts of the film, including fight sequences, some dialogue and the portrayal of private moments.

About the film's fight choreography, Sardar Sathyasheelraje Dabhade said: "You cannot have Bajirao jumping to reach an elephant’s head. History has to be shown as it is. There were many families that were involved in that era. There were other important characters but right now they are showing just Bajirao, Mastani [his second wife, played by Deepika] and Kashibai [his first wife, played by Priyanka]. What about our family? We have also shed blood.”

"There is [also] a scene where Ranveer Singh is shown pouring water over Priyanka Chopra’s head. Those are private moments. How can you show that? We agree with cinematic liberty but the dignity of the person should be kept intact,” added Uday.

Mastani’s descendants also considered the now popular dialogue ‘Bajirao ne Mastani se mohabbat ki hai, aiashi nahi’ vulgar and shameful.

Bajirao Mastani is based on the book of Rau, but Bajirao's family is doubtful of its authenticity.

The families' grievances have been met with Bhansali's silence so far.

Bajirao Mastani releases on December 18.

Than to show the reality you need a time machine to go back in past with a camera and if the real reality comes out to be more shameful than you will doubt the time machine.

Box office should not be the sole criterion.

Descendants have no claim over historical figures. Then artistic liberty is paramount and can not be sanctioned for some "families's" opinions, or for any other subjective reasons. If you don't like a work of art, just ignore it. Third, nothing is vulgar in the song. Its your own mind, which sees things in a certain way. if anything is vulgar, than its their minds. Again, someone's idea of morality can not be imposed upon others.

@Saad Ahmed Khan Because they were Maratha queens -royals. They never danced in palace, nor did they show skin. That was job of entertainers both men/woman. Bajirao queens wore sari like jacket and covered both hands and stomach. And they have distorted his first wife character a lot, she wasn't idiot types like movie shows.

@Dipak Singh You dont seem to have any idea how Bollywood makes historical movies. This will be another mix of "Dabaang" "DDLJ" and "Aja Nach le" with different costumes. Don't expect anything from Bollywood, BTW have you watched historical movie "Asoka"? .

I don't find anything vulgarity in the song. In fact this is a typical Maharashtra folk song. Nicely picturized should not be censored.

This story is about Bajirao and his two wives. The people who feel the stories about others needs to be told can make a movie to tell the story.

A bunch of people are complaining about historical inaccuracies of "ancestors" that lived so long ago that any factual evidence about their day to day lives, personalities, any conversations they may or may not have had etc etc likely doesn't exist in great detail... hmmm sounds legit, clearly after 5 minutes of fame.

@Meghana - What are you talking about? Maharashtra was one of the few cultures of India..where women rights and freedom were celebrated. Those women were the first in post-mughal India to ride horses....and even in 20th century Maharashtra was the first state where women used to ride bikes and horses. Women equality and freedom, was a hallmark of Maratha Empire, one of the primary reasons, which made them so successful. What are you even talking about?
