She was a good artist, par exellance. However, it is common in Indo/Pak to diefy entertainment performers to the hilt. Her initiation into the Film Industry has been described by Saadat Manto in his book as not being an icon of piety. This is what we are good at by putting entertainers on a very high pedestal.

Her voice cannot be compared to the TRUE LEGENDS of South Asia, LATA MANGESHKAR or indeed,ASHA BHONSLE. Although NOOR JAHAN sang ghazals perfectly, her filmi vocals sound "too high pitched and goat voiced",to be honest, and with no disrespect intended. This does not take away the immense popularity she enjoyed in ALL of South Asia. That is to say,she certainly KNEW how to sing as a trained singer and with perfect diction but with an imperfect voice.

@COLIN you have your own views but I think Lata's voice was also too thin and I like Noor Jahan's voice quality better. Lata was monotonous in her singing and sang all songs with the same voice while Noor Jahan was vibrant, each song sounds different. The voice quality sounds different, the expressions are richer. Lata sang sad songs nicely, in happy songs she sounded sad as well. Come to classical both Noor Jahan and Lata were Maestros. Both could easily touch low and high notes. Noor Jahan has easily touched the G5 note without letting her voice go whistle.

Sorry noor Jehan music is very dated. It is not her fault, but Pakistani film music that she sang, was stuck in 1940's. They never even improved on sound. Only great music that came out of Pakistan is pop music, with it's originality ! Even that people who should have invested to take pop music even higher levels, took their money home! This so sad, the pak population is young ,people that control tv and radio, that have money,do not want invest, in young singers, bands, seriously!

@COLIN What an inappropriate, disgraceful comment. It is absolutely foolish to compare voices. Noor Jehan stands alone in her rendering of musical compositions. Can your "TRUE LEGEND" Lata Mangeshkar sing Boojh Mera kya Naam Re, or Leke Pehla Pehla Pyar, sung by Shamshad Begum, as well. Can your "LEGEND" Asha Bhonsle do justice to the song, Mohe Bhool Gaye Sanwariya? There are many examples I can give but your comment is not about Noor Jehan, its about your ignorance of myriads, music with lyrics and without encapsulates. Noor Jehan's popularity does not depend upon your type of comments. She was an Artiste incomparable.
